Hello,

I am currently about to upgrade my computer from a lga 1150 to a lga1 151 with a new cpu, motherboard, and psu. We currently have a windows 7 version that i used a few months ago when i had to reinstall windows for the second time on that motherboard. This still allowed me to upgrade to windows 10 even after the free upgrade date had gone.

My question is if i get a new motherboard, do i need to buy a new OS and if not would i still be allows to upgrade to windows 10? Also would i need to just delete the OS off of my SSD and then re-download it with the new motherboard?

I have read a lot of forums but it seems that a lot of my simple questions are not being answered. If someone could provide me a quick step by step of what to do after changing out the motherboard that would be awesome.(in regard to downloading the OS)

Thanks a million!

Okay, so if you have a legit copy of Windows, and make a Microsoft account, you can avoid having to buy a new copy of W10. To do this:

1. Go to Settings and click on Update and Security, followed by 'Activation' in the left panel. Bear in mind you have to do this before applying the hardware changes - on the PC you upgraded to Windows 10.
2. Here, click on 'Add an account' , and sign in with your Microsoft account. This will link your Windows 10 license to your account.
3. Make sure the 'Activation' part shows 'Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account' after you have signed-in.
4. Make the hardware changes.
5. Once Windows 10 has been re-installed(skip entering the product key during install), go to...

6. Sign-in with your Microsoft account.
7. If you made a local account, enter the password for it.
8. Select the device you are currently on.
9. Check the "This is the device I'm using right now" option, and click the Activate button.

This should re-activate Windows on your PC.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Shektron,

Thanks so much for the speedy reply. This explained almost everything. Building the pc is the fun part for me but the OS i am a big amateur. So do i need to delete the old OS off of my SSD or will it overwrite it? Also if i only have the windows 7 disk would i need to get one of those media installs on a USB to get windows 10?

Thanks.

You don't need to remove the old one from the SSD if you are formatting it. In fact, you will have to format it, so no need to remove it manually. And yes, you'll need a bootable USB with the Windows 10 install. If you want I can guide you with how to create one, in case you don't know.

Glad to help :).

i will be getting the new pieces on Friday and backing up my hdd and sdd tomorrow so if i have any questions during the process i will let you know.

Thanks!
