Question Do I need to do anything else other than just swapping the GPU?

Hi, so when the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT is out I think I will upgrade to that one. Right now I have an Radeon rx 6800. Since it's the same type of card, do I need to do anything else other than just swap the cards?

Nope. They will use the same driver package. I went from an RX 6800 XT to an RX 7900 XTX and didn't need to change the drivers. It was just plug-and-play.

Having said that, I question the point of that upgrade. It would be $500 for not a lot of extra performance.

There were special drivers for 7900 but were unified with others just a while ago so make sure you have latest ones if you switch to it.
