My mobo is a few years old and is only sata 2 with 3gb's transfer max speed. Which is plenty IMO but just wanted to make sure there is nothing I need to install! Whats your process after a clean install and adding new hdd or like me first SSD? THANKS AGAIN!

only reason I'm getting a ssd is to see how it is I just use plane old wd black hard drives they still do all I ask

I think in the ssd property's theres a check box for trim ??

just google up little tip's articles and see if it applies

on win-10 trim

http://www.windowscentral.com/how-ensure-trim-enabled-windows-10-speed-ssd-performance

to me if a ssd was as good as they say/ claim / hype I would of had one years ago [opinion] but now i'll get one for full hands on

anyway you did not say witch pny ssd you got ?? that cs2211 240gb is first choice on my short list

'' Weird thing is I am getting the same scores in 3d Mark with the SSD as I did the HDD '' ya , interesting I think it all hype but is something in...
with ssd only the mb chipset drivers need to be installed.
for a clean install of windows 10 use the windows media creation tool and a 8g usb stick.
if your rig has been updated to windows 10 from 7 or 8 it have a digital key now. so during the clean install of the ssd click skip when it ask for a key.
after the windows media creation tool makes the bootable usb stick. make a folder on it called drivers and download the newest drivers for your mb.
intel or amd chipset drivers
intel mei drivers
sound
ethernet
video.
when you get to the desktop you can install all of the newest drivers then check for any missing ones.
then when your online make sure windows 10 is activated. install and anti virus software.

1. The main caveat is to not have any other drive attached when you do the windows install.
Otherwise you will find a hidden recovery partition on the second drive.
You can attach a hard drive later.
2. if you plan on 120gb, consider 240gb. 120gb gets filled up quickly.

3. Make the sata mode AHCI before the install. That will enable the trim command.

The big benefit of a ssd is fast small random I/O.
That is what windows does mostly. That is not impacted by sata II.
Sequential operations using sata II will be about 2x what a hard drive can do. Sata III will do 3x.
Not to worry about the issue, you will be pleased.

FWIW, I think the Samsung evo ssd devices are a safer buy.

hows that cause they get all hyped up , everyone falls for it ?? I tried to point that out in another thread in the end they all got pros and cons the controller on the pny I listed above look pretty good and has features not showen from Samsung ??

I'm sure there all do a the job there warrentees is just a year apart and that don't protect data loss so bid whoop there

Phison on the other hand has taken a much more active approach. Since they have so many free cycles - via the three dedicated cores - for housecleaning and maintenance the PS 3110 will actively and routinely read NAND cells and test the results against its ECC - even when the data is not request by the host system. This way 'fading' data can be caught early, refreshed during low IO periods and thus PS3110 controller based drives will almost never suffer the same fate as Samsung 840 Evo drives.

thig is if that was a issue with Samsung they don't tell how of if that was resolved you would thing they would hype that up on there drives as a selling point ??

in the end it may just be oranges to oranges ?? I just like the features of the s-10 in the pny cs2211 [for now] just seems like a solid drive for 69 bucks ?? then it maybe a disaster ??? that's with anything I guess [lol]

Hey thanks for the quick replies and great info! I should have said that I have already got Win 10 installed on the 240gb SSD with my media on the old Wd Black Caviar 1tb and everything is working good! I just didn't know if there is a utility that will allow any tweaks or hidden settings. I can't enable trim can I with this older hardware? Weird thing is I am getting the same scores in 3d Mark with the SSD as I did the HDD. THANKS AGAIN!

so far faster booting is all I really see in the end and its not like my platter wd blacks are slow to boot anyway at least not a issue anyway [bios screen - windows screen add password desktop ] not like I got to go wait very long at all . entering my pass word takes the most time due to my great typing skills [lol]
