do i need to reset bios or get new ram?

i have the i5-4960, not the K version. but i need help because when i built my pc, it wouldn't boot and nothing would show on the screen. the cpu fan would speed up for about 5 seconds after turning on and then slow down to a constant speed. do i need to reset the bios? or is it to do with the RAM? the motherboard is dual channel but i had 1 4gb stick and 12gb stick in the slots, ddr3 of course.

MOBO: asus Z87-K
CPU: intel i5-4960
GPU: nvidia 560 Ti
PSU: 700w non- modular
RAM: 6gb corsair ddr3. (4gb and 2gb stick)

have you check if your memory if compatible with you motherboard? or atlest check your manual if your motherboard is ok with 4gb and 2gb memory setup? and of course did you re-seat the memory and graphics card?

Make sure all power connections are installed especially the 4 or 8 pin CPU power plug. If that does not work, try booting with just one stick. Try each slot then the other stick if you still cannot boot.

Then when able to boot, the first thing you should do is boot into bios and set it all up correctly, especially the memory timings and speed. Then install windows then the MB drivers.

Since you have 2 different sticks of memory, I'd bet that is where your problem is. You should have 2 identical sticks or better yet a memory kit where all sticks have been tested together to make sure they will work together.

For the memory, enabling XMP Profile 1, usually sets up the memory perfectly if the memory is 1600Mhz or less. For 1866MHz you just have to increase the memory multiplyer and sometimes maybe OC the CPU some. You don't have matched sticks so there is probably that problem. Try 2 matched sticks if you have 2 of the same out of the 3 sticks.

Your MB manual will tell you all about the BIOS set up. If you don't have the manual, you can download it from the MB web site.
