Do i need to upgrade my desktop pc or will a new gpu do

so basically i already know my gpu is is getting old and fast, i want to goto a 4k setup. if i was to get the latest 4k supported gpu such as the gtx 980 would i have to upgrade anything else on my pc.

If you can get a better CPU cooler and overclock your CPU to around 4Ghz, then you should be fine to just get a new GPU.

12GB DDR5? It should be DDR3.
You should wait for the 8GB's though.

Hopefully a cpu expert will weigh in but think you'd either need to overclock the crap out of that cpu or look at a new one. But, depends on the game itself a lot. Could always upgrade just the gpu and see.

Also, a game like BF4 barely averages 60fps on a 980 at ultra 4k so don't be surprised if you have to turn down some eye candy anyway.

the i7 920 is still pretty capable even at stock speed

but its a great overclocker anyway 3.8 to 4ghz most times with decent cooling

Above 1080p, it's pretty much all on your GPU so your 920 should work just dandy -- especially if OC'ed.

thanks guys should've mentioned that i have overclocked it and have a dual cpu fan on it to keep it cool. im happy at how fast i got reply so thank you all for those. thats great news and gta will never be the same again lol
