I built my PC back in 2014 with this mother board: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
I have the same cpu as then (i7 4900K) and the same RAM. I haven’t changed anything apart from my GPU which I upgraded to a EVGA GTX 1080 FTW. I originally had a MSI 970.

Should there be any reason to upgrade? 5 years just seems like an eternity to me but I don’t know if there is sufficient technical difference between the 970 and 1080 to warrant an upgrade.

thanks!

If you have to ask the question then probably not at the time of writing.

If there is a performance issue now, then it's worth finding out which part of your system is underperforming. And even then it is largely dependent on what you do with it. As it stands upgrading the motherboard would mean a core upgrade of CPU, motherboard and RAM.
