So i have an i5-8400, 16 gb ram 2666mhz, 650 watt psu, and finally a 2060 super. but i want more frames in some games, i have a feeling it is the cpu. what do you think i should upgrade to?

Solution
There is a quick test you can do. Drop your resolution to 720p or similar. If your FPS stay similar then this indicates you are possibly cpu limited, however if your FPS jump up then you are GPU limited.

You should also monitor GPU and CPU usage while gaming. When monitoring the cpu look at all cores/threads as overall total cpu usage doesn’t tell us much.

The 8400 and 2060 are a good pairing. There is no clear weak link as each game and choice of game settings can swing the limiting factor between cpu and gpu.
oh right ofc, playing in 1080p, and my monitor is also capable of 144hz so i would like to reach that.
btw i run with two monitors dunno if it makes a difference. for games its a bit of everything. BFV, Overwatch, Terraria, Pubg, Rainbow six siege, Minecraft, Csgo, Hell let loose, portal 2, Farcry 5, Fortnite, League of legends and more . would like to have a future proof pc as well but i would also like your opinion on if it is even worth upgrading the CPU yet or i should wait a year.

I would wait on a CPU upgrade, especially since it sounds like Intel will be increasing the thread counts of their upcoming processors that should be launching in a matter of months. And for next year's processors, they will likely be moving to a new manufacturing node, which should at the very least make them more efficient and easier to cool. And ultimately, I don't think you would see that much of a performance improvement out of a CPU upgrade in most titles, as the 8400 is pretty capable, and able to keep up with a 2060 SUPER rather well in most games.
