Do I need a backplate? I want to get the gtx 980 but it doesnt come with backplate. I notice the 970 does come with one. My specs are i7 4790k, 800w, 16 gb ram, 2 tb HDD..would i benefit from a 980 or is that overkill? Thank you!

The backplates are to help support some of the big coolers different brands use. So if it has a stock cooler then it probably wouldn't have a backplate.
And yes, you will benefit from the 980, especially if you are gaming at 1440p. I have a very similar setup, just throw in a few SSDs and its the same.
I have the Gigabyte G1 GTX980 with the triple fan setup. I do just fine at 1440p, at 1080p it would be overkill, at 4k you would need at least a 980ti, if not 2.

Yea im just really conflicted, my fps is unplayable and not sure what the issue is, which is why im considering 980 but the return policy sucks on gpus

i do have 1080p tho and dont wanna waste money, so not sure if i should just get the 980 or not

i really dont want anything less than 60 fps, the stutter bothers me so much especially in fallout and thats only with a few mods it stutters real bad with my 270x
