thats my screen shot running two prime95's in torture.

its on the stock cooler, do i really have to get a new cooler?

by the way, what the heck is TEMP3? When i ran it again later at stock speeds with speedstep on, temp 3 hit 126C, i assume that was some sort of error...but i restarted the program like 3x and it still kept coming up.

I have an 6800 extreme on an asrock dual-vsta 775 mobo (yeah I know...still waiting for the nVidia 590/680 chipset mobos to come out).
Anyway my fan is running at 4000rpm and I have already lower cpu temps than yours (40deg).

are you @ stock? what kind of fan?

basically i know its a high temp but i wana know if i should really care that much is all.

Yeah, stock clock, stock cooler/fan (came with cpu).
My point is it seems your fan is running slow at least compared to mine, for some reason. I have a real budget mobo though (for now), so maybe it doesn't control my fan well.

i wonder if your stock fan is better/different than my stock fan. My MB does not control the speed, i turned that option off, at least i thought that turning AI Quiet off would do that. I'll have to play with it a little more and see what I come up with.

PS. if you don't mind me asking, why buy an x6800 and not overclock? I mean i paid 320 for my cpu and i could probably pay an extra 50 bucks to get a fan so that it runs at the same temp as your x6800 at the same speeds.

Well I plan to overclock, but its a long story...

I'm in the middle of upgrading my PC, but still using my old AGP card (6800 ultra) as I don't want to buy a new GPU now, because I'm waiting for the new nVidia DX10 cards out in a few weeks.

I bought the CPU when they first came out so I also bought a cheap mobo (ASRock 775 dual VSTA) to do just for now as its about the only board that can run both core 2 and AGP. I'll replace it with one of the new nVidia 680 chipset boards when the they and the DX10 GPUs come out (must be nVidia chipset mobo because I'm also planning on SLI).

The ASRock is a surprisingly good stable mobo for the price but its slow so I don't feel that its gonna take much overclocking, so I'll stick at basic speed now until I get the new mobo too.

Also I haven't done anything about cooling yet... i think I need better than stock for overclocking. I'm toying with the idea of an Asetek Vapochill LS but the reviews I've seen said it can be a quite noisy so maybe not.

well if you end up getting rid of your stock fan, let me know, because if it is in fact different than mine i'd be interested in purchasing it from you....i dont need anything crazy so this way your stock fan doesn't go to waste and i get something a little nicer than i had :)

and good luck with the new build, be on the lookout of hdcp too since it sounds like you want to buy a card to last.

Sure I'll bear it in mind but I'd be surprised if my fan is any different to yours.
I'm guessing that all intel stock coolers are the same at least for all C2D chips (but I don't know for sure).
It just seems odd that you've turned off auto control but your fan is only running around 2000rpm. Like I said mine is always running at 4000 for some reason.
Ive just used speedfan to set my cpu fan to your speed (closest I could get is 2200rpm ) and I'm getting a (more or less) idle cpu temp of 50c.

i bet cause you have an extreme chip it's a little different...i'll have to post something in the CPU forum to confirm this though.

It doesn't surprise me that intel would want to put a nicer fan on their extreme chips.
