I've been a console gamer since the NES days. Just recently began pc gaming a few months ago. I'm having major problems adjusting to Shooters. Is a gaming mouse/keyboard really necessary?

MSI z68-G43

Evga GeForce GTX 660 2gb
2Tb Seagate ST2000 HDD

I bought a cheap gaming mouse (Gigabyte GM-M6800) a little while ago after my old mouse died. It isn't necessary and I can't say that it has upped my game at all. What I would say is that having an extra couple of buttons on the mouse is nice to have, more convenience than anything else.

For my keyboard I have a Microsoft sidewinder X4, which replaced an old keyboard I was using. Not a huge difference here.

I got both of these at very good prices, and I don't think it is worth it to spend hundreds on them. Although, to each their own.
It's all up to your preference.
I like the "clicky" feel of a mechanical gaming keyboard, whether I'm typing or gaming.
On the other hand, I bought an expensive gaming mouse (MadCatz R.A.T.7), and have used it for about 1 hour total, preferring the feel of my ancient Logitech G6.
