I'm thinking about buying either RTX 3070 or RX 6800 XT. As far as I've seen, 6800 XT is the clear winner in terms of performance, but everyone keeps talking about how important those Nvidia features are. As far I as understand, not all games make use of those features, right? And even though lots of new games will use it in the future, most older games (games before 2019) don't use it and never will, right? Haven't seen a single game that I want to play on that RTX DLSS list. Does that mean that for me the 6800 XT is the obvious choice or am I missing somethig here?

The RX 6800 XT is a performance tier above the RTX 3070 and has double the VRAM. It's the card I have and it's a beast. I have to try REALLY hard to get it below...
the biggest problem RTX 3070 is starting to encounter in some new AAA titles is its 8gb of VRAM -
and it will probably only get worse in the next year or two .
i would not recommend buying RTX 3070 as a brand new card in 2023 .
6800xt has a similar feature to DLSS , it´s called FSR - granted it´s not as polished and good as DLSS
but it essentially does the same thing .

however in todays upper-mid class market the clear winner for me is the
new rtx 4070 which has the best of both worlds so to speak -
it has enough (12gb) VRAM , new DLSS and same raw power as an old rtx 3080 or 6800xt
and it costs the same as 6800xt and only a little bit more than an old rtx 3070 .
not to mention it also draws 100-130W less power than 6800xt/3080 while gaming .

There enough games around now pushing close to 12gb that the 4070 might not look so good in 2 years or so. Both next gen consoles have 16gb unified ram, tbh I would aim at a GPU with at least that to know you can cover the possible demands of future games.

I got a 7900xt as rt wasn't really a priority to me. There are 1000's of games out there that will never see it, its only going to be a feature of new games or remakes or any packs that people decide to make for old games.

same logic also applies to the 8gb vram on 3070, it really depends on what games you want to play as to if 8gb isn't enough.
3070 vs 6800 xt:

.....but everyone keeps talking about how important those Nvidia features are.....?

Not really! Only some Nvidia fanbois, tech-writers and Youtubers who are "supported" by Nvidia are peddling this gimmick.

I'll take take the 6800 XT any day over the 4070, Especially for its 16 GB VRAM, excellent performance and current price which is about $500!

you need it if you decide you do. some people are very clearly swayed by what boxes they can check in the settings and will lose sleep knowing something is not checked.

then there are those of us who load a game, let it do whatever it does in the settings and then we play and enjoy the game. i honestly can't tell you you what settings are set where on my games. i enjoy the experience either way :)

if you suffer from FOMO, then you should spend every dime making sure you can check every box. if you don't care and just want to enjoy the game, then get what can handle the resolution and enjoy your game at whatever the price is.

right now, AMD is priced a ton better for the same performance as you already know. that's all i need to know really. i can fire the game up and it plays and then i go about my life. only spent $250 to do that while many spend thousands and still can't be happy.

to each his own. lol

i rarely look in settings. I think last time I did was in a really old game and I was just curious what it had set my GPU up as. None of the games I play have any of the new features anyway. My AMD GPU is equal to a 3090 which would have cost me $3500 in 2020. I didn't even pay close to that.

I totally agree. The thing is, I've had a 1080p TV until now and didn't worry about the game settings just like you, but now I had to buy a 4k TV cuz there aren't any 55"-65" TVs with lower resolution anymore. And now my 1080p or 1440p resolution games look blurry on the 4k screen no matter what I do. So I need a decent card to get me to 4k and after that I won't care about other settings again. 😀

Yes, it is the future!!! Raytracing is the next big step in gaming. Cyberpunk 2077 RT overdrive shows this impressively. Every light and cast physically correct shadows on every prop and item in the game. Mindblowing...

DLSS as HardwareUnboxed showed this weekend is in most cases as good as native rendering and even better in some cases. Performance increase is significant. DLSS is one of the best features currently available to gamers....

AMD also has the option to use FSR in a lot of games, which is just their version of DLSS. They also have RT and the 6800XT is about the same as the 3070 in RT performance, while being around the same as an RTX 3080 10GB in standard raster performance.

Doesnt seem like much of a choice between those 2 cards tbh 6800XT is way ahead.

Frame generation might change things a little, but you'd need a 4000 seriesd card to get that.

The RX 6800 XT is a performance tier above the RTX 3070 and has double the VRAM. It's the card I have and it's a beast. I have to try REALLY hard to get it below 60FPS at 4K. As for RT, it eats up a chunk of VRAM and 8GB on the RTX 3070 isn't enough as it is. The RX 6800 XT will even out-live the RTX 4070, let alone the RTX 3070.

I've tried RT and I'm not overly-impressed with it. It's not something to really worry about yet. I've been gaming on PCs since 1984 and I never needed it before so I don't need it now. Games look amazing these days whether RT is on or off. I just leave it off because, to me, it's just a waste of electricity to make my card run it when I honestly don't care about it.

With the way that RT is these days, 99% of the time you won't notice it and the 1% of the time that you do, you won't care. As for DLSS, that's only for weak cards because powerful cards (like the RX 6800 XT) don't need it. In 3-4 years, maybe the RX 6800 XT might need to use upscaling but by then, I have every confidence that FSR will have become every bit as good as DLSS.

I know that you already chose a solution and it was a good one, I just wanted to give you my take anyway. I own an RX 6800 XT and I have no doubt that I made the right choice.

Thanks for the info man! Yeah I've order the GPU already, but it's good to hear someone else is running and loving that GPU. :) I've ordered mine for 680€ (755€ with 10% discount for cash) which is a crazy price for something that's way closer to RTX 3080 than to RTX 3070. I went for the Sapphire Nitro+ cuz I saw it on a couple of "best brand" lists. As far as DLSS goes, you've confirmed my assumption. I was thinking the same - why would I want a GPU that can upscale a lower resolution into 4k if I can have a GPU that can run the game in actual 4k, and all that for pretty much the same price. It's also nice to hear that you're having trouble to get the GPU below 60fps in 4k. :) I've never been the "Ultra settings" kind of guy, nor do I need more than 60fps in my games, but I do like to know that if I'm running a game on high settings my GPU has still some spare power left and isn't literally hating my guts for forcing so much work on it and driving me crazy with very high temps and fan noise. Judging by everything you said, this GPU is just the right amount of performance that I need. Tnx!
