do i really need the i7-4790k?

I’m in the process of building a gaming pc. Mostly will be using it for watching HD videos, HD Streaming, playing the latest games, emulators and lots of heavy multitasking for example, having lots of programs open. Like, chrome with 6 tabs on the side, a video hd playing, and/or playing games and listening to music while streaming a video. Do you think that the i5-4690k is plenty enough to handle these situations at their worse time, without slowing down my computer and its performance, or should i go with the i7-4790k

The i5 would be enough for now....however that being said i am still running an i7 2600k thats a few gens back. If i would have gotten an i5 i would have possibly felt a need to upgrade sooner. Just something to consider.

go with the i7 4770k to save some cash. you will need it for all that. but if u got the cash go for the 4790k.

THE issue is cost.

Buying the i5 will cost $200+.
Buying the i7 will cost $300+.

If You want to upgrade to an i7 later, it's not a $100 upgrade; it's a $300 upgrade then maybe You see a used i5 processor, maybe You don't.

For that reason, I would buy the i7 if I thought I needed it. It would also spend the bucks on a fast clock speed.

Intel has done something interesting with their chips. The build in Intel 4600 graphics, so You can start with integrated graphics then move to a discrete graphics card later. This pushes consumers to buy a nicer processor up front, and then add the video card later.

That's an incredibly good point. Every other place i ask they fail to mention i might just need it in the future and in later will save me money... thanks
