Do long DVI extension cables degrade the video quality?

any premade, decent quality cable you buy should suffice for the length it is.

Around 50-55ft is where the signal usually degrades. I've heard this is also true for HDMI.

I would suggest against using a long cable especially if it's a gaming machine. The more distance between the monitor and computer, the more latency you introduce.

check out monoprice.com, they have very inexpensive cables. Cable quality/shielding is not very important as the data is digital and not very prone to interference or degradation.

A friend has 50ft HDMI from PS3 to 1080p plasma, I can't tell a difference in quality at all.

You are aware that the signal travels near the speed of light right? No cable could introduce latency because of length, the signal would attenuate to nothing long before you could notice the lag. The only reason you notice lag in a phone conversation with someone far away is that the signal must be amplified many times over which introduces the slow downs. If nanoseconds concern you I might have to call you superman.

Just to clarify, digital signals are either received 100% or not at all. There are some instances when they are right on the border line causing "sparkling."

You haven't discussed your audio solution, however. You might run into a lag issue between your video and audio.

I have a VGA and 3.5mm stereo audio cable working at 16feet between my PC and HDTV with no issues.

I beleave 50ft is usaually the spec for data transmission without data loss for digital connections, although you can go longer without any issue. Beyond that, there is a risk of data corruption unless the signal is bosted first.
