M.2 formatted interface is just PCIe laid out in that shape. No reason you couldn't hook up that way. 1x PCIe at any revision is faster then 1 Gbps ethernet.
The pic he has is mpcie not m.2. They have the same form factor as does msata but they are not compatible with each other. Mpci is completely different.
