Do my CPU bottleneck the graphic card?

CPU: Intel E5300
MOBO: Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
GPU: Geforce 9800GT
RAM: 3GB 667Mhz (Oc until 933Mhz)
Monitor: 23.6" (1920x1080)
PSU: Cooler Master Extreme 650 Watt


Currently i having a cpu E5300, stock speed 2.6Ghz. I OC it until 3.7Ghz. My question is

1) If i upgrade to gtx275, does the cpu will bottleneck the graphic card?
2) With a new graphic card, can i play Crysis with Highest setting but off the anti aliasing with a pretty smooth condition?

Ic. anyway i hope that my cpu wont bottleneck the graphic card. The reason i bought the graphic card is because i like to play Crysis so much. The graphic is AWESOME. Currently i only can play with medium setting, the graphic already very nice. I can't wait to plug a GTX275 inside my com and play with very high setting.

High maybe but Very High, on average, I believe most benchmarks see it getting around 20-25 fps on and that is on a core i7 with 1600+ Mhz ram.

Maybe you will be able to play it on Very High if you are lucky but even then it will be laggy with anything major on screen.

1) No, it is plenty powerful enough.

2) Depending on your definition of smooth, possibly.
I would expect it to run a little over 30 FPS on average without AA enabled.
You may need to lower some settings if you are unhappy but it will defiantly be faster than your current 9800GT.

hmmm....
the e5300 has a stock clock of 2.6, he is OCing it till 3.7.... wonder why can't I run my GTX 295 on the amd 6400+ without bottlenecking it 🙁

That would be because the GTX 295 is quite a bit more powerful than a GTX 275 (in fact it is TWO GTX 275's on a single card) and the Athlon x2 6400+ is a very old (slow) CPU compared to current offerings.
I doubt that your CPU when overclocked would be as fast as his at stock 🙁
I would recommend upgrading to a newer and faster CPU to keep your GTX 295 happy.

On the bright side, though, you can really crank up the eye candy without getting a performance hit now!
Crank the settings up and bask in the glory of 16x AA 😀

hmmm, how is that possible :|
his stock speed is 2.6Ghz, and mine's at 3.2Ghz. I usually run it OCd to 3.4~3.5Ghz
both of them are dual cores as well...

so I can crank up 16AA on most of the games at 1920X1080 now and get a decent playable frame rate? :)

The issue is not so much the speeds of the CPUs and the amount of cores, more the underlying artecture.
His CPU is using the latest update to the Core 2 arch which is quite a bit more effecent clock for clock than your CPU.

Relying on memory alone, your CPU at its stock 3.2Ghz is roughly as fast as a Conroe 2.4Ghz dual core.
As the update to the Wolfdale arch made the line about 8% faster and his CPU runs stock at 2.6Ghz....

What motherboard are you currently using?
It may be possible to update the BIOS and drop in a faster Phenom II or Athlon II and give you a speed boost.

Also, I guess I over spoke or you took me to literally 😛
I really just wanted to get the point across that, when you are CPU bottlenecked, you can turn up the visual effects with no performance hit.
That is, at least until you turn it up so high it becomes a GPU bottleneck again 😉

am running an asus mobo which supports am2+/am3 chips and have the updated bios running. (cant remember the model no, and am out of country right now :|)

my main worry is, i am not going to push the gtx295 to its limit, all i want is good playable frame rates at 1920X1080 with some visual eye candys on. I run a ati3450 now and get *** frames, even without any eye candy on. (Ghostbusters the game seemed like a slow mo movie for me :|) Will my processor fail to even give me this basic demand i have from it?

Going from a 3450 to a GTX 295 is a HUGE jump.
Even though your CPU is slow enough to bottleneck the GPU, you will still see a massive performance increase.
Although you will not be getting the maximum performance out of it, I believe you will be happy with the results.
If you end up wanting more performance after the fact, you can hopefully upgrade your CPU then.

hmm..but some people are suggesting that i can get the same results by choosing other cheaper cards...like the ATI 4890.
whats your opinion about that?

q1. can the ati 4890 get me nice playable frame rates at 1920X1080 on my tv...with some of the eye candies on?
q2. same question with the gtx 295. even not running at full specs, will it give me good playable framerates at 1920X1080 with some eye candies on? If i do decide to upgrade the cpu eventually, would a phenom II X4 955 be good for the gtx 295.

I am returning back to my country in Oct 1st week, so going to keep my eyes open for the 5xxx series cards as well.

1) It really depends on what games you will be playing.
For many games, a 4890 will be plenty fast enough, for more demanding ones, it will be a little on the slow side.

As you are not going to be purchasing a new card for a few weeks, defiantly keep your eyes on the new 58x0 cards.
If the rumors are true, the 5870 should offer performance roughly equal to the GTX 295, DX 11 and cost quite a bit less.

Since when this tread become OC zone?@@ haha...anyway, i think phenom II X4 955 will not bottleneck your gtx295. No offense, my friend say that AMD 3.0Ghz is slower than Intel 3.0Ghz. Last few week i using AMD 5000+ (OC to 3.0Ghz). When i play Street Fighter 4, i will feel lag. But once i change to Intel 5300, in the same speed, i wont feel lag anymore. GTX 295 is too expensive for me. So i hope GTX 275 can run pretty well in Crysis this game. Because i really like this game so much. Does anyone using the same spec with me? That is e5300 with GTX275? Because i want to know the exactly result whether can play Crysis on MAX setting with off the anti aliasing or not. Thx for u guy...

I had my eyes on the gtx275 as well, had really good scores on so many review sites.
I had saved quite a bit for a full upgrade, but after buying a nokia n97 recently, am only left with some odd au$950 to spend on upgrading my comp....
with limited resources...am kinda bombarding myself with so many questions :|

i am gonna aim at the gtx 295 with the Seasonic M12 80+ 700W Psu, and if needed upgrade to a phenom in the near future, if the 5XXX series don't be what people are saying it is.

Else go for the ati 4890 with my current cpu and psu, the Coolermaster extreme power 600.

@garykam: It isn't that Intel is faster 3.0 then AMD 3.0 it is how the cards deal with information that is different, Intel just has it designed better. The phenom II X4 955 is also a completely different design from the AMD 5000+ (plus 2 more cores)


@siddsm: I am not sure about Seasonic, never used them myself but make sure you do your reserch on it, all 700W PSU's are not made equal, and many companies use cheap parts to cut cost.

Seasonics used to manufacture most of the PSUs for Corsair, specially the entry level HX series.
Check the link I gave on my previous post, does that PSU's spec suffice for the 4890? Any clue on what's the 4890's minimum amp requirement?
