I have a relatively new Mac Mini running Mavericks. Can I use a non-Apple monitor? If so, are there specific features I need to have?

Solution
All Macs manufactured after 2006 have DVI and HDMI outputs, you should be able to run any monitor you want, the drivers will adjust the resolution according to what the monitor can handle.
if it is a 1440p or higher monitor, you should make sure the dvi/displayport/hdmi revision spec on the mac is high enough to drive the monitor. otherwise for 1080p@60hz, as long as the monitors input matches the macs output you should be fine 99.9% of the time.

I have a 2009 Mac Mini that I'm running on a 47" JVC television via HDMI. I work with live-video projection systems, and we frequently plug Mac Minis and MacBooks into our video switchers using different kinds of connectors. I used to use my old PowerMac with a Samsung LCD monitor. I have rarely used Apple monitors on any Mac, and have never had a single issue.
