Do Nvidia custom resolutions represent actual performance?

I'm thinking of buying a 1440p monitor, but I want to test my games at that resolution, just to see what kind of performance I'll be getting. So my question is- say I set a custom resolution of 2560x1440 (on my 1080p monitor) - will my performance be comparable to running on an actual 1440p monitor?

Solution
Yes, Performance should be the same, as it just sends the 1440p frame to the monitor, which then compresses it, as far as I am aware, so performance should be comparable.
Edit: If you are on a 660 as reported by your sig, then you might need something more powerful, as a 660 is not suited for 1080p^ gaming.

That might be true, I'll test a few of my more demanding games (Crysis 2, BF3) and post how it went.

Origin is giving me grief, but Crysis 2 (on Extreme) doesn't drop below mid-30s, usually stable 40s. That is quite easily one of my most demanding games, so I should be just fine until I save up enough for a 970, 980 or one of the R9 300s.
