[SOLVED] Do portable SSDs have slow transfer rates?

Solution
You are limited to USB 3.0 speeds, and by speeds i mean real world speeds which are around 100MBps for a sequential read/write (aka single large files)

Random reads and writes/lots of small files are going to be much slower.

You could try and get a USB Thunderbolt PCIe card for your computer and find a portable SSD with that interface, but again if you are doing random read/writes or dealing with small files the benefit will mostly lost.
