It is like a memory card, but it is soldered to the board. It is part of the reason why these things can be so small.

Look at this Ipad mini 2 board. It contains almost everything.

Yellow is the storage. Next to it is the SOC. it contains the cpu video card and ram(volatile memory) and more.

On most desktops and many laptops you CAN take out the hard drive or solid state drive to test it and try to recover files on another computer. If a drive is encrypted, it is not as easy to recover.

Modern tablets just do not allow this. Best to always keep a backup just in case they fail. Some failures(dead battery, broken screen[as long as you can...
Tablets have local storage. This is like a hard drive, but made of flash memory.

It is normally a part of the machine(part of the tablets board) so transfers rely on the machine at least being functional enough for a computer to detect them.

"CPUs"(I assume you mean a regular computer. cpu is technically just the processor since it stands for central processing unit) Can have hard drives or flash memory based solid state drives. Some of them(this is common on some laptop computers) may also have built in memory that would be difficult to recover if the system is damaged as well.

hmm. i'm confused. so the built in harddrive for both cpu and flash memory of the tablets is like some sort of memory card? or am i wrong? i have cpu that died and wanna test myself to see if i can take out hardrive in order to transfer files. i have tablet. but just in case it it died, i wanted to learn how to transfer files. these days things is just getting too expensive nowdays which is sad 🙁
