Do you need a 1920x1080 resolution monitor to run games on 1080p resolution?

Not technically, but the image won't scale properly if you try to run games @1080p on a 720p or a 1440p monitor. Some lower-resolution monitors may not work with 1080p at all. It's always better to use the native resolution of the monitor.

No, they will probably look worse than 720p due to bad resolution scaling. Just use the native resolution of the monitor.
