Do you need to buy 4 pack RAM for 4-channel memory?

I need 4-channel RAM, 32gb. So I was thinking to buy two 8x2gb packs. Would doing so still let me have 4-channel RAM? Or do I need to buy a 8x4gb pack?

Thanks!

Solution
All your ram must be from the same kit.
Disparate kits may work but it will not be 100% guaranteed and will not get you support if you need it.

Better to buy a 4 x 8gb kit. the fewer sticks the better the motherboard can handle them.
To insure compatibility buy a kit that is on the motherboard ram QVL list.
Or, at least explicitly supported on your motherboard by the ram vendor.

You *can*, but again, they're not tested together. RAM is sold together for a very good reason.

The internal workings are designed for the capacity of the kit.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards, can be very sensitive to this.

You take your chances.
What is your plan "B" if the new ram can not be made to work with the old??
