Well... technically you might get away with it if you boot up in safe mode - remove all 'non compatible stuff' and reinstall the 'new' drivers from mobo etc.
I'm not recommending it though, as you MIGHT have some stuff that never uninstalls completly etc.

Basically: it's better to do a clean install.. yes.
