Its pretty much the same as buying one of the external adapters to use a desktop gpu with a laptop.

Egpus have been around a long time. You're still limited to pcie x1 or 2 plus the adapters are still kinda pricey. Usually just selling the laptop and getting a midrange laptops with a dgpu gets better performance and you keep your mobility. A desktop is cheaper and better performance though.
