Do you zoom?

1) Do you ever zoom on the lightning gun or just use it like a railgun?
2) I wish the lightning eyecandy could be turned down, I find it offputting
compared to a gunpowder sniper rifle or shock beam.

About the only time I personally use the Lightning Gun is when I'm
missing the AVRIL and need to pester high-flying Raptors (this occurs
most frequently on Torlan, most other ONS maps have a surplus of
AVRILs). Given that, using it in zoom mode is the best option. I'm
not into picking a hill and sniping at infantry, and I find the weapon
too unreliable in "railgun mode" with even a 50ish ping. Offline I'll
sometimes use it as a railgun against the bots.

From a gameplay perpective I thought the Lightnig Gun was a big step
forward over sniper rifles, its just not that much fun to be tagged
with a headshot and not even know where it came from so you could
track down the rat upon respawning. For deathmatch-type games I think
the LG is more appropriate, for the more strategic gamestyles the
sniper rifle is acceptable IMO.

I use it in both modes, it's a very effective anti-sniper weapon and
works OK when I run out of chaingun ammo in those up-close and
personal encounters.

I've always enjoyed the Halflife death mode, where you can look around
and see what's going on around your corpse before respawning. It's
especially nice to be able to call out to your buddy why hasn't died
yet ("just around the corner to your left, OK, now he's reloading").
And no, it's not very realistic.

Agreed re: sniper tracking, but I wish the sparks were less intrusive
visually, a simple red line like the rail-trails from quake would be just
as good, and not get all over my screen with sparks and offshoots etc.

I find the electricity eye candy very offputting when trying to rail people
using it in unzoomed mode.
