DOA motherboard?

Bought the following

Gigabyte GA-73VPM-S2H with a e5200 chip.

Assembly went fine, fans powered up but no beep and no boot screen. Did the normal tests, took out RAM, swapped RAM, tried resetting CMOS etc but nothing... no beep, no action.

Getting an exchange now, but am thinking did I do anything wrong or was I just sold a dud? anything else i'm missing? cables and sockets all plugged up and checked a million times.

The E5200 isn't supported on that motherboard until BIOS F7 which was released on 02-10-09.

ok got the beep. got the bios working by adding an old PCI video card. the onboard VGA card didn't work.

was an old IDE drive, and got the horrible "sata found working in IDE mode" and now windows tries to boot but gets BSOD and restarts.

this because of the bios? how do i update bios now??

Are you trying to boot an old Windows installation from the old hard drive? You'll need to do a fresh install of Windows to get everything working correctly.

yes i was, out of interest why doesn't an old windows install work?

Because the old Windows installation has drivers and registry settings for the hardware from your old computer. Most of the time it won't boot at all. If it does boot, the chances of you not having any problems are pretty slim.
