Docking Station Issues

So I recently got the Blacx thermaltake docking station, built to use 2.5 and 3.5 sizes, the purpose was so that I could take the hard drive out of my old laptop to try and salvage my files from it. Here is where the issue comes in though, the laptop I pulled the hdd out of actually died after it overheated, so it may be the HDD is just bad, but I can't really tell. When the HDD is inserted into the plugged in docking station, a new drive called 'Local Disk(E: )' Pops up, but when I try to open it, suddenly the 'my computer' window stops responding. If I try to close the window, the taskbar and desktop seem to crash (all icons except for the stat button on the taskbar disappear) and taskbar becomes unresponsive. I suppose what I really need to know is whether this means the HDD I used is bad, if the docking station is bad, or If i am simply doing something wrong.

Solution
Try the drive in another computer, as an internal one is best, or try using another external enclosure if you can. That should rule out the enclosure as an issue. Or try another drive in your enclosure.

Doesn't seem to be making any odd noises, the noises it is making are not particularly audible, but I am pretty sure it is coming from the drive. I should also mention that when I get to the point where my explorer has basically crashed, I have to force restart, as everything starts becoming unresponsive.
