does 2400mhz ram work on 2133mhz motherboards?

Yes, it will downclock to 2133Mhz but there should be no compatibility troubles (provided we're talking DDR4 ram on a DDR4 motherboard)

yes. ram, in most cases, will run at a default speed of 2133 unless configured otherwise in your bios. this is regardless of the advertised speed. there are exceptions where some ram will automatically overclock.

Yes you can, the speed of the ram will just decrease from 2400MHz to 2133Mhz that the motherboard allows.

So is it like that with all motherboards or will I have to manually go in and configure something because I read about something called XMS. thanks

you are referring to xmp profile. its a setting in your bios which will load a pre-configured overclock. generally if a set of ram is advertised at 2400mhz, there will be an xmp profile associated for that speed. its just a few clicks.
