If you buy a $150 deck, you won't get much overclocking out of it, due to cheap components(capacitors), cheap 6 phase VRM, etc. Then their's the longevity part of it, cheap boards last 2-3 years on heavy gaming, don't cheap out, buy at least a $200 board with a minimum of 5 yr warranty. Asus is the best brand when it comes to boards. I use the Sabertooth Mark 2 Z97 and absolutely love this deck.

Don't know what you mean by a "bad" motherboard, but a poorly designed one won't be able to be overclocked well, may show crashes and may die faster.

If you are not overclocking, a 80-100 motherboard is good enough. I don't think I have ever built a computer with an over $100 motherboard and never had issues when sticking with good brands. But I also don't mess with overclocking except some light 10% or so stuff for fun.
