Windows Vista and later all automatically index your hard drive to make searching happen much faster. XP and earlier can also index the hard drive, but it takes some manual configuration to make it work as well as it does in Vista/7/8. Whether your hard drive is indexed or not, you can still perform any search you want. The searches just take longer.
