Does AMD A series CPU -GPU work together with graphic card or it is getting replaced?

Hello everyone,

I just have a simple question. I am looking at AMD processors now and most of them comes with GPU. Do I really need that or should I try to find a CPU without GPU (if there is any left)?

Or to make it easier to answer, do they work together or a graphic card overrules the GPU of the processor?

Thx for the answers!

There are a few APUs that can work together with some AMD graphics cards, but they are normally low end cards that provide little to no performance boost when Crossfired. In all other cases, the graphics card overides the integrated graphics.

Therefore, you'd be best off looking at CPU only chips. If you let us know how much you want to spend on a CPU and graphics card, we can give some suggestions.

Hey Woody1999,

my old tower died so I am about to get a new one, but I only need CPU, mobo, rams and graphic card as I still have all the rest. Want to spend about 350-400 all together, mostly for gaming. I am not playing super high resolution games tho so a mid level would be enough.

Thank you for the quick response!

for the 5k series APUs, kaveri, the integrated GPU stays active for compute use regardless of whether a dedicated GPU is present or not, this is a good thing.

4k series and prior however, it depends on the BIOS settings as to whether the integrated GPU will be enabled or not, as the integrated GPU in these are not incredibly useful for compute. Same goes for intels integrated GPUs (except maby some of the latest ones, haven't fully checked that).
