Does AMD have a upcoming counter to MAXWELL?

I have had both brands in the past, and I am wondering if anyone knows what AMD is planning as a counter to the GTX 900 Series.

I ask this because I am about to purchase a new GPU. Sub $400 Range, so either R290X, or GTX 970 as the market currently stands. But if AMD was going to release something in the next month or two I would likely wait and see.

I know they have rumored "Pirate Islands" as the next release. Does anyone have details on when this will be?

I have a really hard time going AMD right now as I think the GTX 970 is a seriously great deal. Efficient and powerful with good overclocking headroom. Whereas I may get very similar performance with the 290X I will sacrifice a cool efficient PC. If the R290X I most like was right at $300 I would be more tempted, but it is still holding strong at $400. (Sapphire VAPOR X)

Sorry to tie a few notes into one unorganized thread but I figured less clutter this way 😀

Solution
I personally would go with the GTX970 now since even if AMD come out with something new even if it performs better it will be more expensive.
Gah 🙁 I may just wait this one out. I really want to see what they've got coming. I would think that they are losing quite a bit of potential sales everyday they do not have something on the market to compete with Maxwell. Performance wise the 290X does, but the GTX970 just seems to be the better buy overall.

I really doubt AMDs equal performing card will be any more expensive Rolli. Infrequently is this the case. Although Nvidia did price these GTX970's aggressively I think AMDs next release will be right on par.

They already counter acted the GTX9xx release by dropping the prices on the 290(X) cards, they will still want to sell those and will be looking at the GTX980 pricing when the time comes to price the new cards.

You really cant say either way until the dice are on the table. AMD nearly always drops great price/performance, especially in the midrange. I do agree they will still want to sell the 290X cards but I think they'll have to drop a bit further after the next release. I dont even think they are competing now, another 10/15% off the 290X and sure. Nvidias pricing will make it harder on AMD but I think they are capable. Time will tell!

Dont be such a FANBOY Swede.. I've ran both, at least five of each.. They are on par with one another. I usually pay less for similarly performing AMD gpu, but they generate more heat and draw; nvidia is the civilized one. Generally I prefer Nvidia drivers, but each has their snafus.

AMD processors may not be half as good as their counterpart, but such is not the same in the graphics department.

Also when you get into higher res gameplay AMD really starts to shine. The 290X is often more capable than a GTX970 there.
