Does the plate help other than identifying each port and making the PC back look more tidy?
  1. If so, is it OK to hack an old I?O plate so it will fit?
  2. Or should I make a serious plate by drilling a piece of aluminum?
  3. Or steel?
Thanks

It doesn't really matter, it is pretty obvious what attaches to each connector. It helps keep spiders and stuff out of the case, so anything will do.
