does an onboard lan chipset work the same as a wifi card

I'm looking at a motherboard that has a lan chip set onboard. Can I use that instead of an actual WiFi card

Just about every mobo out their has a LAN/ethernet connection, some mobos are set up for Wifi, but it's easy to just pick up a USB WiFi plug and go from there

Normally a LAN chipset is basically for cabled ethernet, if it has built in wireless it will say so, what is the mobo?
