Does an ssd still work if its not on the QVL?

Im planning on using the gigabyte ga ab350n gaming wifi motherboard and a 500gb ssd. What I want to use is the WDS500G2BOA while the WDS500G1BOA is the only one on the QVL. Is the generation leap a problem? The second gen is cheaper and probably faster. Advice?

It should work fine, but it's possible to have a hardware conflict. My friend had a Maximus IX Code that wouldn't boot with his M2 drive. They may have fixed it since with BIOS update but after much troubleshooting he returned the MB. I personally have never had any issue and don't check my SSDs on the QVL. I've had no issue with RAM model on QVL but using newer version than one on QVL. Further, I've have multiple RAM kits on QVL that wouldn't boot stable so they are more of a suggestion I think.
The newer version shouldn't give you any issues.

m.2 drives are much more of an issue, being still pretty new.
Full compatibility between SATA and NVMe m.2 is not guaranteed across all boards and slots.
