does anyone know how to mute a mic without installing any apps on windows 10

ive seen a load of videos of people using apps to mute their mics and i used one but it keeps freezing my pc. is there a way to mute my mic using window 10 itself? like setup a hotkey and make it mute my mic. if there's a solution, please tell me. thanks

right click on the sound icon in your task bar (next to the clock) select "recording devices" and right click on your mic, then disable.

I don't think a hotkey is possible without some sort of app installed, such as Nircmd. One solution is to use a hotkey built into a program such as Skype. You can set up a hotkey to mute the mic in Skype if you have it installed. Use that as a global mute.
