Guys I was looking at Asrock z68 Extreme 4 gen 3 board ......and I noticed they have not mentioned anywhere in the specifications tab on ASROCK's website about the PLX PEX8608 chip ...like in other of their mobos....It is only written on the front overview page and it says "Take Z68 Extreme4 for example"......my question WHATS UP ???Why aren't they clear about this like with their other mobos ????

Just thought everyone might be interested that you will only get the benefit of PCI-E 3.0 with Ivy Bridge CPU. Please see note from ASRock website.

Note: To run the PCI Express 3.0 slots in Gen 3 speed, you must install the Ivy Bridge CPU which supports PCI Express 3.0. If you install the Sandy Bridge CPU, the PCI Express 3.0 slots will run only at Gen2 speed.

Also, PLX PEX8608 chip onboard for Extreme 4 gen. 3
Note: With PLX PEX8608 chip, it generates more PCI-E lanes for PCI-E devices, so that all PCI-E devices are able to work at the proper speed simultaneously!

thats a good question as I am having problems running the 3 pciex slots at correct speed.

As I stated in my previous post, Z68 Extreme 4 Gen.3 has PLX PEX8608 CHIP onboard. Go to ASRock website, select model and scroll down through features, it's near the bottom. To achieve PCIe3 bandwith/speed you need gen.3 board, PCIe3 gpu and an Ivy Bridge CPU. You will not get PCIe3 bandwith/speed unless you have these components. CPU and GPU not available yet.

maybe I better explain the issue. I am not trying to get pciex 3 speeds...I am trying to get the 3 pciex 2 slots to run at the correct speed.

If that is the case then why do i have problems getting correct write speeds on my ocz revo drive while using an sli set up.

I have 2x gtx 460 in sli and a ocz revo drive in the 3rd pciex slot (pciex5 to be exact). My write speeds have been halfed in this slot,,,read speeds are perfect. After many hours of trying to get an answer from Asrock regarding the slow speed on this slot I did a few experiments and removed the second graphics card and put the revo in that slot (pciex4 slot). The write speed went straight up to it maximum of 500gbs.

This seems to me that either the slot is faulty or the slot can not run at the x4 speed as is stated on the website.... So the question asked in the opening post is a valid one

Can anyone explain what the problem could be. If it is a faulty board then I need to get it replaced

thanks in advance.

I would also like to point out that the reason I bought this board was because of the information on the asrock website regarding the ability to use the 3 pciex 2 slots at a 8x8x4 configuration.

thanks.

Thankyou! you have been very helpful. I have heard alot about ASROCK and seen there newly designed board z68. From the way it looks they are really gonna take on a major roll for once and join the ranks of evga,gigabyte,msi,etc... but after what I have read here looks like they might be 6months to a year before they are really online as far as functionality is concerned. And I know that ASrock has played a good roll so far with the surprise wealth of sata 6gb ports on there mainboards. So in a way they are somewhat leading the way with the can and cannot. In the end your question sounds like something that can only be resolved through the newly designed intel southbridge, that is slated to come out in early 1quarter 2012 on the new intel platform. till then its experiment time with all the mainboard company's regarding more connectivity through southbridge. Ya know what it could be your pci express lane is running to fast to slow. southbridge is not pumped up on voltage IO voltage or otherwise keep at it.
Asrock seems like the type of company that would make a mainboard with functions that might be offset but with the right tune can do just what they say so keep at it. keep up the good work and thanks for reaching out.

I mean I am a part of the 1366 crowd and it took a long time for someone to ligitimatly admit that the uncore of the processor should be messed with, but it wasen't with the raising of the speed it was about lowering, and wow unfound stability. So nothing is difinative with new mainboards and processors as far as endusers are concerned(not wrote in stone the voltages and do's and don't do's. So really keep at it.

update

just had a response from Asrock teckiguys

They tested another board in there labs with same set up as me and this is what they say.

Dear Mr. Griffiths,

I tested it and could reproduce the issue, I will forward my findings to R&D in Taiwan.
The read speed stays okay, but the write speed is slower in PCIE5 slot.

Kind regards/ mit freundlichen Gruessen,
ASRock Support

so now waiting to find out what they are going to do.

Hi, I just came across your thread. You probably already have a better answer than this but the third PCI-E slot will slow down if you have two video cards just due to the fact that the first two PCI-E slots are occupied.

I am not sure what the REVO PCI-E SSD requires as far a PCI-E lanes but I think that any of the current boards except the AsRock Extreme 7 and the Asus Maximus top-end (and maybe the top Gigabyte boards) boards slow down the third PCI-E slot when the first two are used. And even these top-end boards are incapable of supplying three 16 x 16 lanes in the three PCI-E slots.

That being said, the REVO SSD may not need 16 lanes of bandwidth. You may need to check with OCZ to see what the SSD requires.
