A friend and I are looking for a game to play co-op via the internet,
something similar to Diablo. I came across Bard's Tale, but can't seem to
find if there's a multiplayer option. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

Sacred has mp, but I dunno if they ever got it working worth a flip or not.
The game's at least mildly entertaining for a while, regardless.

Bard's Tale isn't worth playing either single or multiplayer, IMO, but I
don't think there's a mp option. At least the PS2 version I had didn't.

If you can find some of the ingame voice clips and listen to them, you'll
experience just about all of the BT that's worth fooling with.

Or barring that, just play around with the introductory web site page.
That's as least as much fun as the game, maybe more so.

To specifically answer your question, no, Bard's Tale has no
multiplayer component, online or offline.

Dungeon Siege and Neverwinter Nights both have LAN and Internet co-op
support (NWN's multiplayer is a bit more robust).

Geeze, I feel old. Not to mention uninformed. I don't keep track of
Playstation or X-box games since I don't own one, so when I saw your
message I thought you were talking about the origional Bard's Tale. The
one that got me hooked on RPGs way back in the late 1980s on my Apple
IIGS. Did anybody else make that mistake, given that this is a group
labeled IBM PC GAMES?

On the other hand, I hope they release a computer verison of it, since
that's how THe Bard's Tale got started, though I do understand they
released an NES version of the first one, but not the sequals.

Unfortunately the only game like Diablo is... Diablo. Others have tried
(Sacred), none have succeeded. WoW isn't bad, but it's still no Diablo.

That's exactly why I wrote "baaad". :)

Diablo is a ripoff of Gauntlet.

Fun Fact of the Day: In exit polls at the election 2004 the percentage of American
voters citing moral and ethical values as their prime concern was 22 percent,
continuing a trend of *decreasing* perceived importance of morals: In the 2000
election 35 percent cited morals & ethical values as their prime concern, and in
1996 a whopping 40%, almost twice as many as in 2004.
(Bet you hadn't gotten that impression from the press, had you?)

There is a PC version of the recent Bard's Tale console title. They just
released a demo of it.

I guess someone answered your question about Bard's Tale (not having a
multiplayer).

If you liked Diablo (and I assume you're talking about Diablo 2 here) then
you should definitely check out these:

Neverwinter Nights Platinum (best of this list, IMHO)
Nox
Darkstone
Dungeon Siege: Legend of Aranna (the expansion includes the original game)
Icewind Dale series
Sacred (not too high on my recommend list but it's fun for 20 hours or so)

All of those have co-op multiplayer and you can play over the internet. For
Nox you need a free expansion pack download they did that will let it do
co-op but it's still out there.

If you by chance meant the original Diablo and you never tried Diablo 2,
then do not walk, but RUN to the nearest store and get the Diablo 2
Battlechest, it's everything Diablo was but better in every way. It's
awesome.

And it's an even worse ripoff of Space Invaders.

Cheers!

Ok, cool, thanks everyone.

First, thanks for the clarification on the multiplayer. Yes, I was talking
about the *new* PC version that the demo has just come out for. I guess it
doesn't sound like I'm missing anythng, though. I guess I'll at least check
out the demo and see.

As for other games, we've actually played D2, Nox and Darkstone. I've
played Sacred and Dungeon Siege (probably about 15-20 hours) and have put
those down. Actually, I think I lost my saved game from DS and just gave
up. Sacred I still have on the PC and really liked it for a while, but
haven't been back yet.

DS2 is coming out this summer maybe. That will be something to check out.
I have tried some of the demo's of Neverwinter Nights and IceWind Dale, but
have found them to be a lot more complicated than the hack and slash of
Diablo. Maybe I just need to spend some more time with the demos.

For as big at Diablo and D2 were, I can't believe there haven't been more
games trying to do the same thing......

There have been. They just didn't have "it".

You might want to try some of the D2 mods, many of which make it a very
different game, but not in the most important ways.

A very popular and good one is Chaos Empire.

There is a PC version of the new one coming out, or it may have been
released already. By all accounts the dialogue is very funny, but the
gameplay is just diabolical.

IWD2 is great MP, but it is slow going. The MP game still plays like
the SP game in that you have to pause every so often just to catch
your breath. The other problem is that you cannot take two steps in
many parts without triggering a battle.

You would think.

There have been "efforts" but nothing great.

Sacred was probably the best attempt to copy Diablo II.

Also there was Prince of Qin, a diablo-style game set in ancient mythic
China during the Qin dynasty. Pretty neat, not great tho.

You might try Divine Divinity, it's not multi-player but it's a cool
Diablo-style single player game.

Another option is to get a hold of a Playstation 2 and play one of these
games:

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance II
Hunter: The Reckoning
Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes
Champions of Norrath
Champions: Return to Arms

These are all Diablo-style hack and slashers and they support multiple
players co-op, but of course, you have to actually be sitting next to the
other player on the couch. If your friend lives somewhere else that may not
be an option to you.

Supposedly Champions of Norrath on the Xbox has online play via Xbox Live!
but I haven't verified that myself.

Also if you happen to have a Dreamcast there was a game called Record of
Lodoss War that's based on the Anime series which is diablo-style and very
cool. No online play tho, but I think it did have co-op for on the same box
multi-player.
