Does chipset matter?

I'm doing a big upgrade for my PC one step at a time as funds become available. I'm upgrading everything but the CPU and RAM one step at a time.


Firstly, I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade motherboards?


Secondly, I have a i7-3770 (non-K) and I have a motherboard picked out (ASRock Z77 Extreme4) with the right socket (LGA 1155). I was wondering if the chipset mattered when upgrading?

Newer chipsets might add things or give you better performance

Z series chipsets are more expensive, and only worth it if you're going to OC or CF/SLI. As you've got a non-K chip, the former doesn't apply.

I'd suggest just getting a cheap H77 board.
