My friend has been bugging me about this question and I wanted to ask if core 2 duo supports 1080p monitor. He wants to buy a 22 inch lg ips monitor. His config is intel core 2 duo 2.4 ghz, 3 gb ram and intel mobo with intel g31/33 chipset with vga output. He has no dedicated gpu. Will he be able to run the 1080p display? He only uses it to watch movies.

Solution
Yes, it'll support 1080 res.
Check the monitor connections, though some new monitors don't allow for direct VGA connection, so he'll need to use a VGA/DVI converter which will reduce the display clarity.
Probably his best option would be to follow the advice of smeezekitty and drop a cheap dedicated card into the system to avoid the use of video converters.
It should support 1080p, I got Dell Optiplex with Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00Ghz at work and it runs Dell U2410 1920X1200p monitor without problems!
But your monitor should have connections and I'm not sure that monitor would run through VGA because that Dell runs through DisplayPort

The CPU itself doesn't have the GPU so it doesn't matter.

That said the old intel graphics were pretty awful. Even if it can generate 1920x1080
performance is going to hurt. Even scrolling and videos might be pushing it.

Probably best to get a cheap GPU like a 6570 or GT630
