the seller is right to an extent. The advise is to buy 2 matched DIMMS in a kit. This will allow you to operate in Dual channel mode, increasing your memory bandwidth. SO thats a good thing. So 2 x 4 or 2 x 8 would be best. having 8 + 4 means you won't have dual channel, but you will have 12gbs instead of 8 (providing as I mentioned that they work together.)

The problem with getting the extra stick of ram, and putting it in with your current ram, is that you may have problems with getting them to work together. I'm not saying they won't work, but often there are issues. It comes down to being the same speed, same timings, but also the same build of DIMMS. So if you got 1 stick 4 years ago, chances are you won't be able to get one that...

my advise would be to get the 2 x 4 gbs and just use 8gb and sell the old DIMM to offset the cost.
