Hello Tom's Hardware members!
I have a very particular question that I have not been able to find an answer to. As said in the title, I want to know: Is DirectX 12 is backwards compatible with DirectX 10 (and its superset 10.1), and therefore can it support DirectX 10 games?
Some background: Right now, I am currently working on a Windows XP-10 rig that will be able to play games from 2003 onward. Here is its current specs:
Currently, I have XP SP3 (32-bit) installed on the hard drive, and Windows 10 on the SSD.
The XP install is for all of the DirectX 9 games, and Windows 10 can play DirectX 11 and (of course) 12 games. By determining whether or not DirectX 12 supports DirectX 10, I could perhaps save myself from having to install Windows 7 or Vista and therefore save some space on both the HDD and SDD.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
