Hello Tom's Hardware members!

I have a very particular question that I have not been able to find an answer to. As said in the title, I want to know: Is DirectX 12 is backwards compatible with DirectX 10 (and its superset 10.1), and therefore can it support DirectX 10 games?

Some background: Right now, I am currently working on a Windows XP-10 rig that will be able to play games from 2003 onward. Here is its current specs:

  • ■ Intel Core i5-750
    ■ Asus P7H55-M motherboard
    ■ 2x4GB G.Skills Sniper DDR3 2133MHz RAM
    ■ Nvidia GeForce GTX 760
    ■ Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion
    ■ Western Digital Blue 1TB HDD
    ■ Crucial MX 500GB SSD

Currently, I have XP SP3 (32-bit) installed on the hard drive, and Windows 10 on the SSD.

The XP install is for all of the DirectX 9 games, and Windows 10 can play DirectX 11 and (of course) 12 games. By determining whether or not DirectX 12 supports DirectX 10, I could perhaps save myself from having to install Windows 7 or Vista and therefore save some space on both the HDD and SDD.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry for taking long to respond.

I see. Well, yay! Will save me the trouble of trying to install Vista on this machine of mine, because when I initially tried it (with a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, mind you), it gave me that stupid "system not compatible" error (paraphrasing). Or Windows 7 for that matter.

Also, I just found this article ( https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-download-install-directx-2624489 ) that confirms what you said. Double yay!

If anyone else have some super-specific exception of some sort or the like that they would like to share, please do, because I would very much like to hear it, but I believe that my question has been answered. Thanks madmatt30!
