Does dust affect/damage the system?

I recently upgraded my pc to core i5 4590 and gigabyte gtx 970. But i do not have a very good cooling in my case, so what i do is just open up the case tray and play the gsmes so that the pc may remain at normal temperatures and this has worked out for me. Now that the case is open, the system is becoming dusty (although i close the case after shutting down). I wanted to know if the dust will damage my system??

Large amount of dust can cause a "blanket" effect resulting in increased heat buildup, but simply cleaning it occassionaly will prevent this. Dust can also block fan vents. It's not too likely that dust would cause a short circuit.

i clean up my pc once or twice a month to ensure that the fans are fine.

If your case is open, you might want to do it more often. Install a couple fans and dust filters maybe?

i already have two fans. one is the corsair 120mm led fan, and the other came with the case but is very good. should i open the case while having these two fans?? the gigabyte gtx 970 also has 3 fans. should i continue this practice or is my system has sufficient ventilators?

What are your temperatures on load with the case closed?

That's not so bad. What cpu cooler do you have?

i only have fans, one is corsair 120mm led fan (rare fan) and the other came with the case which is of cooler master (front fan)

Ok. if you think your temperatures are too high (I think they are ok), you should upgrade de cpu cooler. What case do you have?

the temperatures that gpuz and msi afterburner tells, are they based on real physical sensors or just a calculation of the temperature according to the pressure its going through???

The temperatures you told me, were they gpu or cpu?

Oh, ok. Those temperatures are perfectly fine imo for the gtx 970.
What are your cpu temps under load?
