It really depends on how it was implemented by your motherbd.
For instance Current Gen Intel boards have PCIE lanes direct from the cpu for the GPU(s) and then more from the chipset to run all the peripherals. These peripherals can be wired PCI or PCIE depending on the age of the board and what the manufacturer chose for the actual chips being used. You should have a diagram/drawing of how the board is 'wired' in your users manual.
Something like this but the manufacturer would have even more off the Chipset, like audio, extra usb, maybe some sata's....
But to answer your question, if its a pcie NIC chip that they used then it would be 1 lane.
