[SOLVED] Does fresh copy of OS required after cpu upgrade?

Hi all,

I have upgraded from Ryzen 5 3600 to Ryzen 7 5800 since December, but had nothing but trouble since due to random BSODs during gaming (especially gaming) and sometimes randomly during idle, mostly when I am not using it. I have read countless of BSDOs issues with respect to Ryzen 5000 series and always figured it was just buggy motherboard BIOS. Recently, MSI finally released AGESA 1.2.0.0 for my board which I have been waiting for, and now I can finally game on stock without BSODs or game crashes. Prior to that, I would need to OC to lower core and constant stable voltage to game, but I do need to do that anymore.

However, now I am getting random BSDOs on windows start up or low idle usage like opening chrome. It seems to only happen once and then it's fine but nonetheless something is wrong.

Every BIOS update I made, there has been some sort of different usage that causes BSDOs. I am considering RMA but before that AMD advised to reinstall windows. Does installing a fresh copy of windows would actually/could potentially solve the problem? Each time I have updated my MB's bios, it fixes different BSDOs causes but created new ones. I am figuring it is either a faulty CPU or just bios version instability.

Unfortunately, I sold my 3600 so I cannot do a swap test to ensure it is not the bios/MB.

Can anyone confirm/recommend that in this case if a reinstall of windows is actually worth it? I will do it, just hesitant a bit since I will have to re-install all my apps again.

Try a repair install/keep my files/apps....

Might want to give Memtest86 a few loops....

Or, set your voltage back to where it was/default, and see if stability is restored...

I thought I had a RAM issue as well but I ran memtest86 over night and had no errors.

Try a repair install/keep my files/apps....

When you say that you the options for windows (a fresh install I think it's called?)

I am running stock settings, PBO off nothing else. Before my BIOS update, I used to use Ryzen Master to only OC while I play games otherwise I would leave every day usage on default (stock settings). Now I can leave it on stock for gaming but I get BSODs on start up. For instance, today I turned on my PC, it crashed within the first 15 min. But ever since that crash, I did not get another BSOD. It seems like I only get it in the beginning of usage.

I called AMD directly to ask them questions before I start the RMA process. They said to re-install windows since windows might be configured to my old 3600, so when I have different usages/loads it might be configuring itself to the 3600. Something along those lines. It doesn't make sense to me to be honest but I am no windows specialist.

I did update my AMD chipset after my BSOD today, we'll see how that does before I attempt to re-install my OS.

It probably won't need a fresh OS install.

But as always, be prepared for that circumstance.

Since this post, I have updated my chipset drivers and haven't had a BSOD yet. Maybe that was the issue? I guess I'll see if I get any weird BSODs in the next month. If I don't get any then I'll consider it "fixed".
