Hello! I'm a gaming video editor for some YouTube channels. I use Premiere mostly and some After effects sometimes.

I'm thinking of building a Ryzen 9 5900x PC. The only query I have is do I really need a high tier GPU like the RTX 2070 - 3070 to have decent video editing performance? Or buying a cheap gtx 960 will also do the job?

I know most of the rendering is done on the CPU side and the GPU is only used for rendering some GPU effects + playback. But should I really invest in a high tier GPU if my main goal is only video editing and no gaming at all?

I mean if there were 2 setups -

  1. Ryzen 9 5900x + GTX 960
  2. Ryzen 9 5900x + RTX 2070

What would be the difference if I tried editing on both.

Will the rendering times decrease?
Will the playback be more smooth?
Will the GPU effects render fast?

I've google a lot but I'm unable to find the answer. Kindly help me in this regard.

Best regards,

Look at an i7 12700K paired with a Z690 DDR4 motherboard and an RTX 3060 12GB.

Oh thank you very much for you reply. I was just checking out the reviews of the new intel 12th gen CPUs with the performance cores. It seems like intel has taken the lead again. However my question still remains.

Actually, I am a little short on budget so I just want to know how much of a difference adding a dedicated GPU make while video editing because currently I dont' have the budget to afford a high end graphic card. So will I able to edit just as fast without a GPU as I would be able to edit with a 3060?

Thank you very much again,
Kind regards,

You can probably get away with a cheaper GPU, but from what I gather, the GPU isn't that important to the workflow process. The bulk of the work, being the encoding, is only done on the CPU.
