Do I really need gsync for decreased tearing or do I just needs 144hz refresh rate? If 144hz helps with screen tearing, how bad is the screen tearing compared to gsync?
G sync should have the same input lag as if you were running a game at the monitors max refresh rate. Gsync completely gets rid of Lag from V sync and tearing without v sync.

Does a 144hz refresh rate help with screen tearing? If so, how much less does it help than gsync?

From what I've heard a little bit, but the tearing will still be visible even at 144hz.
A 144hz (aka 144 fps) monitor needs 144fps to be optimal. Anything less then that make it copy/duplicate frames. If your video card can only push 60fps, it's an extreme waste of money getting a 144hz monitor, when a 60hz would do.
