Does hz increase fps?

Hello,

Thinking about if it's worth it getting a new monitor with higher hz

My current one has 60, I've got an evga 980 ti + i7 4790k and max fps I get on gta maxed out settings is about 60-63

I've tried overclocking the card but the fps doesn't go up a single bit although on other games like battlefield 1 and battlefront I get 80-140 fps

I'm wondering if the monitor has anything to do with this since my friend who has an rx 480 8gb + 75hz monitor is getting around 70 fps

worth it. if youre gonna upgrade it to above 144hz. else dont waste your money. tho a good upgrade would be upgrading to 1440p or ultra wide for immersion

No, as long as you don't have V-sync on your monitor refresh rate will not limit your framerate. So getting a new high refresh rate monitor would do nothing for your GTA performance. It would allow you to see the high FPS you're getting in other games though.

So 980ti performs worse than a rx 480 which is 400 or more less...

No, there must be something else affecting your performance. Are you sure you and your friend are playing with the exact same settings?

the monitor itself won't limit the fps from the machine, so a new one won't help. in a game where you get a lot of fps like the ones you mentioned, a new monitor would allow you to see those frames but it won't stop extra from being made.

something else going n with gta v to keep your fps low. it's a pretty gpu intensive game where the others you mentioned are more cpu intensive. not every game will give the same fps on the same system.

likely your friend has different settings being used for the slightly higher fps he is seeing. or some sort of profile that works good for his 480.

Well, not sure what's wrong with my card then since I saw a video and the guy had the same specs as me and was getting 80+ fps

the driver version can be all the difference in the world at times. the newest one may net better performance or take a hit when it intended to fix an issue.

"same exact specs" is not exactly all there is to it. not saying the card may not have a problem, but lots of little things effect performance beyond parts. windows version, updates installed, stuff running in the background, driver version, can all effect overall performance. plus as already noted, settings within the game can effect a lot. turning off one extra piece of eye candy can have a dramatic difference. often these things are stuff you won't even notice is turned off. if those extra 10 fps mean a lot to you, tinker a touch with the settings and see what you can figure out. usually reviews done with a game that explores these settings and can help identify what will quickly bump those fps into the 75-80 territory you may want

I have 16 gb ddr3

Would upgrading do ddr4 make any difference?

it would help some but to get ddr4 you need a new cpu/mobo as well. 4790k does not support ddr4 at all. no one released a mobo with ddr4 support for haswell cpu's.

so ddr3 is only option for you.
