Question Does in game resolution affect monitor refresh rate?

I have a 180hz 2k monitor.
The monitor panel only supports 60hz at 900p it's in the manual.
In order to get 180+ fps i have to change game resolution to 900p.
So is the monitor actually running in 180hz with 180 fps or is it using 60 hz and showing 180 fps.

Obviously depends on the resolution you are using, if you actually change the resolution of the games to 900p it should run at 180Hz if you run them at 2k it will run at 60Hz or whatever the monitor says for 2k.
