Does it matter how many cores a CPU has?

I was reading an article that stated that most programs don't make use of multiple cores.

If this is true, what should I look for when purchasing a new processor?

Note: For 99% of the time I use Linux.

that used to be true. not really true anymore.

right now a strong quadcore is best in most applications. looking forward, who knows.

Right now, most programs don't. But us gamers know that later programs and games are going to take advantage of multi core capabilities.(I'm talking to you FX processors!) But right now, the best cpu would be a 4 core intel cpu as it will have good multitasking capabilities and has a higher single core benchmark score. For gaming, I would recommend an i5-4670K. For home use and student work, I would recommend an i3-4130.

the more cores a cpu has the more programs it can run simultaniously.
it depends on what you want to do.
for programing a linux dual core cpu is ok.
if it was for gaming quad core whould be the choice.

However, the entire system must be in balance so if you have a lower budget a cheaper CPU like the AMD X4-760K might make a lot more sense so you can put more money towards the graphics card.

Let's say your building your PC but it works out you have roughly $240 for the CPU and for the graphics. You could buy an i5-4670K and just use it's iGPU (HD4600), but it would be better to get the X4-760K ($90?) and a $150 Asus GTX750Ti graphics card.

That's assuming similar motherboard prices which isn't always the case.

Yes you can. It all matters about your budget and patience. But I would advise you to start strong with a 4670K, and a good GPU like a 270 or 280. That way, you won't have to worry about upgrading and new parts and all that hassle of putting a new GPU in. Get a $1000 budget and then get the parts I suggested.
