Does it matter which dimm slot i put my ram in?

I currently have a MSi z170a gaming m5 motherboard, and I installed my ram in slots 1 and 3. Now, when i read the manual later, (Cause im dumb and forgot to read about the slots before hand) i noticed that i should have put a stick in dimm2 first, and the model showed the sticks in 1 and 2. Now, Slots 1 and 3 did allow the computer to POST, but i was wondering if i would get better performance out of slots 2 and 4. Also, if i were to switch the slots, would the computer be fine and boot after the switch if i did that (as in the memory not being corrupted and such) Probably a really dumb question, but im a first time builder, so im still not entirely sure.

If the manual recommends DIMM slots 1 and 2, those will provide dual channel speed. If you have them in 1 and 3, you are losing some performance by only being in single channel speed.

If you add another pair of matched RAM sticks, they should go in 1 and 4.

The manual has it in slots 2 and 4, not 1 and 2. with that being said, obviously 2 and 4 are dual channel, as well as 1 and 3. But just because im a newbie, I was curious if accidentally putting the sticks in 1 and 3 and not the manual recommended 2 and 4 would have any affect on speed, with both being dual channel.

Well, you are the one that said 1 and 2. But no, it doesn't make any difference which pair of matching lots you use. Some boards' manuals recommend using one set first for best stability. But if your board doesn't have that disclaimer, it won't matter.

Asus recommends slots 2 and 4 in all their boards. This is by design. It makes life easy. Many aftermarket coolers especially the twin tower style can broach slot 1, but it's very rare to find a cooler that'll broach slot 2 as well. So slot 1 isn't usually recommended as it'll stress out new builders who don't understand that 1 is A, 2 is A, 3 is B, 4 is B, so 1/3 is the same as 2/4, dual channel.
